Everyone knows the song “Bleed Mascara”, a cult within the scene, this band have remained fairly neutral throughout their, dare to say, average career. “A Death Grip On Yesterday”, is certainly within this description of “Atreyu”. A methodical and comparatively monotonous sound with chords and rhythm to match that’ll leave you with a fairly enigmatic, metallic taste in your mouth, was that album really good or really bad?
I’m sure to write a review of this nature is to offend many devoted fans who need “Atreyu” in their life, but quite frankly, this is one reviewer who could quite easily manage without this noise. The lyrics hardly stir any imaginative and inspirational highlights, not even lowlights, in-fact, almost comical, masked by a “deep” sounding melody, “You took me home, I drank too much, because of you my liver turned to dust.”
The imagery of such an album conjures up ones of drunkenness, hot tears and hurt, this subject matter been done so many times but is still so poignant for anyone who cares to call themselves human. However, to cast a negative and calloused light upon an album that has obviously had a lot of work poured into to attempt an album of “epic” sounding proportions is perhaps, a little unfair.
A healthy injection of metal within the run-of-the-mill screaming and underlying Goth resonance is Atreyu’s trademark. However, being their fifth album, progression seems to be a word lacking meaning in the world of “Atreyu”, the sound is stale, unoriginal and dripping with utter decay. A degrading predictability that is the sort of sound that students need whilst learning the period time table by memory, or better still, a predictable beat that you could probably line dance to.
This album is either going to be loved or hated, depending on your view of the music industry and the world of “Atreyu”, the best way is to find out for yourselves. Check it out, but you have been warned.
