Now for many people, this will be their first time hearing of or listening to Brigade, as this is their first release since joining the highly credible Mighty Atom Records. However I had already heard the bands first DIY release ‘Safe Hands EP’, which I have already reviewed for Pep-Rock and can be found here. So basically I do have something to measure this EP up and after listening to and enjoying the ‘Safe Hands EP’, I have to admit that this is a puzzling one.
It sounds like they are trying to create a more complex sound this time around and just don’t really pull it off. The first track ‘Made To Wreck’ is ok song but never really reaches it’s full potential. ‘Safe Hands’ is a redone version that was on the first EP and still sounds great but seems to have lost a little bit of edge that the original version while ‘Meet Me At The Funeral’ could also be an excellent song but is let down by the chorus. The final track ‘Null And Void’ is also much of the same, sounds good in parts but is an overall disappointment, which pretty much epitomizes my view of this EP.
This time around Brigade seem to be aiming for a much more dynamic and more layered sound that moves them away from the Post-Hardcore norm. At times the songs sound more like Aereogramme or Biffy Clyro than they do like Will Simpson’s (vocals) big brother’s band Fightstar, which is definitely a change from the first EP. Made To Wreck is the bands first release through Mighty Atom and I was expecting a lot more but hopefully we’ll see better things from this band in the future as they have already proved with the first EP that they can make an impression.
