Two observations to start us off, emo is certainly a dirty word to most music fans today and when mentioned makes most think of thick rimmed glasses, bad wavy dark hair cuts and t-shirts to small for the user. Also, what’s thought about when emo is said to your average music fan is bands like Funeral For A Friend, Finch and Taking Back Sunday. Neither of these observations are in the slightest bit accurate yet they are very much popular belief. Also if most people were to believe Copeland would be tagged off as the latest "emo" passing trend band that will disappear from your radar given time. New flash kids, it isn’t going to happen. These guys are a top indie rock band who are here to stay and prove that Militia Group seem to fail in the "putting out of bland records" stakes.
A band with a great debut behind them and a critically acclaimed EP it was always going to be tough to live up to what they had already become. I'd say they have had a darn good try at pushing the boat further with this sophomore release.
Essentially as a whole this album is an emotional roller coaster. Every spurting lyric of heart felt emotion is felt pumped right through the speaker and gives you the perfect idea of what lead singer Aaron Marsh was going through when these were penned. This is none better shown on "You Have My Attention" when Marsh makes sure our hearts are made to feel exactly like his, gushing with emotion. Rarely does a record produce and connect so well with the listener but things are kept nice and simple and the record and the ideas as a whole are brought forward all the more for it.
If one track is to define this record you need not look further than the screaming opener "No One Really Wins". Soaring lyrics, quiet passages, rocking chorus. If you want to know what this band is about download this and try not to be convinced. Forget the preconceptions. Forget emo. This is simply piano led indie-rock done to a grand standard.
