Band Of The Month
Cougars - Pillow Talk - Andy
Album Cover

Now Cougars describe themselves as ‘A rock band playing rock music’, which is pretty vague, but I would describe the band as a rock and roll band with elements of straightforward punk rock and even dashes of Ska and Hardcore. This eight piece (there that’s right, an eight piece) that hail from Chicago and are signed to Go Kart Records obviously have many different influences and every track on Pillow Talk sounds different so you’re bound to find at least one track you like.

The two-piece horn section certainly adds a lot to their sound and in a few songs they even use a synthesizer but not in a catchy melodic pop-punk kind of way. This works to great effect especially in songs like ‘There’s No “High” In Team’ which is a real highlight and sounds like Capdown with a hint of Houston Calls. That’s about as bouncy as Cougars get though and this shows in another highlight of the album ‘Mouth Of Todd’ which is a great rock and roll track with a hint of punk which really shows a lot darker of the band.

This album is very much a slightly evil punk and roll record, which has the addition of the horns and synth to temporarily lighten the mood. This certainly isn’t one for the happy go lucky Fall Out Boy fans out there but if you like your music a bit darker and more sinister then go and give Cougars a listen and you’ll hear a high energy band somewhere in between Rocket From the Crypt and The Bronx who I bet put on one hell of a live show.
