So are you wondering who the next big thing to come out of the Fueled By Ramen camp is gonna be? Well wait no further because Cute Is What We Aim For have arrived. Fueled By Ramen have brought us the likes of Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco, The Academy Is… and Paramore over the past couple of years and Cute Is… look like the next band to be hitting the big leagues as well as the magazine cover. I’m quite ashamed that it has taken me this long to review this album as I have been pretty much listening to it solidly over the past couple of months.
Cute Is What We Aim For are kind of similar to The Academy Is… but probably even more pop influenced. All the elements are here to make these guys one of the catchiest Pop-Punk bands around. Songs like ‘There’s A Class For This’ are just so accessible and fun that I’m sure they will have legions of teenage fans singing the words back to them at shows around the world. It doesn’t just end at that song either as there are other songs on this album which are equally as good. ‘Sweet Talk 101’ is a similar bouncy pop-punk tune, as is ‘The Curse Of Curves’, while ‘Moan’ is just an anthem in the making with a huge breakdown towards the end of the song that was made to be sung along to.
I think CIWWAF do have a way to go though before they are up there with the likes of The Academy Is… and Fall Out Boy especially on the lyrical front. The lyrics are all slightly more obvious and maybe lacking in life experience especially in songs like ‘Risqué’ and mainly ‘The Fourth Drink Instinct’ which I can’t actually stand to listen to anymore. It’s about a girl with a bit of drinking problem and goes ‘and she slurs “No, no, just one more”, and one turns into four”. It’s just awful.
This is just a rare downer though on an otherwise extremely enjoyable and upbeat debut from the Chicago based four-piece. This album was the soundtrack to my summer of 2006 and apart from one terrible song there isn’t much that can be faulted. There’s not much chance that this album is gonna change the world or reinvent the wheel but if you like your Pop-Punk catchy and sunshine filled then ‘The Same Old Blood Rush’ is the album for you.
