It’s a shame that a lot of bands can’t seem to think for themselves anymore. Why has it suddenly become a trend to copy any and everything that’s popular? Money I guess. Or fame? I don’t know if Darling Waste want both or neither but they certainly tick all the American copycat boxes.
I’m not going to be too harsh. Darling Waste are nice. The word my primary school teacher used to put me in detention for using. But they are. I don’t know how else to describe them. ‘Learn To Be Happy’ is a pretty song but it has absolutely nothing original or inspiring about it. It sounds like The Calling have spent a couple of days at rock school with Lifehouse teasing them in the playground. Opening with the lyrics “I heard that you like him, in fact that you are smitten, I heard that he has tattoos, I heard that his band’s real cool” it sounds like Bowling For Soup obviously did their homework for them. Bowling For Soup, Lifehouse and The Calling? Oh and add in a bit of Something Corporate piano for luck. I know, it’s odd. But that’s Darling Waste, they’re trying too hard to be like every band and getting nowhere by doing so.
Lead singer Lance Williams has a nice voice. It’s husky enough to carry the boring band he has backing him. ‘Changing of the Seasons’ sounds like every other power ballad every other band has ever done, full of violins and yawn inducing lyrics, same applies to ‘Drive Away’, ‘Sorry Even Matters’ and ‘Life Is So Rad’. Pretty but dull. ‘I Love You…Get Away From Me’ is the best track on pretentiously titled ‘The Manifest Destiny Rebellion’, an upbeat song which adds the slightest bit of life to the album.
I expect Darling Waste are good looking. I expect they all have perfect hair, sharp dress sense and toothy smiles. Which is nice. But the world is full of good looking bands with songs as an accessory and unfortunately Darling Waste are just another band for the quota. Full marks for effort, no marks for originality.
