Don’t you just love it when amongst all the shit on Myspace, you actually stumble across a really great band. For me Death Can Dance are one of those bands. I’d never heard of these London boys before I got a random myspace message from them and decided to take a listen and I was blown away. Their sound is so mature for guys so young and its nice to listen to a band for once where the comparisons to other bands don’t come so easily. After hearing a few of their songs, I knew I had to hear more so that’s when I decided to get my hands on this their debut EP.
‘The Lines’ is a six track EP that is very well produced and is full of thunderous guitar riffs and break neck drum beats as well as the kind of melodic harmonies that have made so many bands huge in the past. ‘High Angels’ starts the EP off greatly with its many changes in pace, it goes from heavy to melodic in the blink of eye an eye. Then there’s ‘Collapsing Mode’ which is just pure quality from start to finish with its chunky guitar riff, amazingly catchy chorus and with the double bass drum featuring in all the right places, amazing stuff. The EP then slows down a bit with the more melodic ‘Ever Smile Again’ and ‘Before The Walk’ before ending on the title track, which is also the heaviest song on display here. ‘The Lines’ is a nice little off the wall metalcore number, which will have you jumping around your room as if you were fifteen all over again.
I’m sure this band will get lumped into the Emo/Screamo category by most people but that is an unfair label for a band with so much variety to their sound and for a band that obviously hasn’t just followed the step by step guide to emo that so many bands use as if it were the bible. Death Can Dance have obviously taken influence from those genres but they are taking that influence and are creating something unique from it and aren’t just rehashing a tired sound. ‘The Lines’ is a great start for a great new band and I for one can’t wait to see what these guys do next.
