Las Vegas quintet Ronnie, Max, Omar, Bryan and Robert came together through networking website Myspace to become Escape The Fate, steadily becoming renowned for their energetic and instinctive live shows. Finding support through local radio stations, their hometown following grew at an exponential rate, which would spread nation wide after touring with My Chemical Romance. A major attribute to this bands success, besides the rapidly growing fan base, is the time in which the band was born the height of the post hardcore / screamo era. The first release, ‘There’s No Sympathy For The Dead’ is a five track EP that epitomises the hardcore rock scene, with heavy guitar riffs and emo-edged lyrics common to the genre to which it is associated.
An unknown band to me at the time, Escape The Fates debut EP is one of those rarities that you stumble across, whilst searching through Internet retailers. I managed to find this particular gem through the customers who bought this item also bought link and took a chance. A chance, that paid off and a choice I have not yet lived to regret. The opening song, Dragging Dead Bodies, with a Senses Fail-esque introduction, is a perfect overture to the band and who they are. Like a wave washing over you, instantly you feel refreshed to find something so honest and so heartfelt. As the lyrics are added, there is a sudden surge of energy that flows through your body and hits straight to your heart with intentions to kill.
The album then progresses, with the songs remaining of the same consistency, gaining in substance and volume, building up to (for me) the final crescendo in the form Guillotine, a heavier offering with more complex drums and dirtier sounding guitar riffs. After listening to the album, I find myself in somewhat of a paradox. On the one hand there is a sentiment of satisfaction and fulfilment, whilst leaving you on the edge of your seat with a strong desire for more.
With sounds comparable to Atreyu, Underoath, The Used, Senses Fail and Silverstein, a US tour with My Chemical Romance and Alkaline Trio under their belt and the height of the post hardcore / screamo and emo scene as it is, Escape The Fate are set to be one of the big acts for the upcoming year. Currently participating as an act for The Warped tour, these Las Vegas boys are set for stardom both US and worldwide.
