Band Of The Month
Exit Ten - Exit Ten EP - Jess
Album Cover

I’m ready for it. I’ve had my heavy, gruesome intro. My hands are clutching onto the sides of my seat, I’m ready for musical lift-off, for the long, deep scream that unoriginally opens most hardcore songs….but I don’t get it. Thank goodness. My head’s a bit messed up by the pretty vocals that have interjected the neighbour’s nightmare of heavy lead guitar, shredded bass and tempestuous drums…but I like it.

Exit Ten aren’t what you’d expect, they seem to take parts of metal and emo, fuse the two together and succeed. I can’t think of any comparisons I could make to any other band which is a hard feat to successfully accomplish.

‘Absence of Forgiveness’ is simple yet effective, the vocals don’t necessarily grab you but they work in contrast to the grating of the instruments in the background. The lyrics are unoriginal but they work with the song and the pace varies between short heart attacks and long sweeping walks in the park.

Exit Ten have potential but I get the impression that they work much better as a live band rather than recorded. The beautiful vocals of ‘Paralise’ are straining under the weight of the heavy guitars when they really should be given the opportunity to shine. ‘Sold Out’ and ‘Sound of BC’ share the same staggered pace of ‘Absence of Forgiveness’, but by this time in the EP the novelty has worn off and you wish they’d come up with a new trick to keep you entertained.

The main criticism of this EP is the fact that it could just be one long song instead of four separate tracks, no song is particularly distinguishable from the other. Although the format of pretty vocals with thrashing guitars is fairly unoriginal, the tunes of the songs themselves lack imagination and make you sit back and cross your arms instead of take notice of what’s going on. There is potential behind this EP and I really hope they find it soon in order to succeed and win over new fans, including myself.
