Band Of The Month
From First To Last - Heroine - Andy

A couple of year ago when From First To Last released their debut album ‘Dear Diary…’, they were a new band entering an overcrowded market and in my opinion they came out with one of the albums of 2004 were one of the only bands keeping screamo alive. So about a year and a half on they have released their sophomore effort, which has come out to a very mixed reaction manly due to fact that it is absolutely nothing like the last album. Big magazines like Kerrang and Rocksound love ‘Heroine’ while a lot of fans of the debut album are shunning the new record. So which side of the fence am I going to sit on?

Well as mentioned before this album is very different from the first and if it wasn’t for Sonny Moore’s very distinctive vocals then you could be forgiven for thinking this was a different band all together. Upon the first couple of listens I didn’t really like this album at all it, it was a big let down after the last album but after listening to it a few more times it does grow on you. Songs like ‘The Levy’, ‘Heroine’ and first single ‘The Latest Plague’ are definitely the standout tracks although I think this is due to the fact they resemble the older FFTL stuff more and have the killer choruses that I’m sure will be screamed back at them on many an occasion in the future.

All in all this isn’t a bad album by any stretch of the imagination, it’s just so different. I think that From First To Last will probably lose more fans than they gain from this release which is a shame as they have shown the balls to put themselves out there and to do something a bit different which is more than can be said for a lot of the generic bullshit about at the moment. This album is heavier and faster yet still anthemic at the same time, From First To Last are a different band now so like it or not, you better get used to it.
