Band Of The Month
Hard-Fi - Stars Of CCTV - Jess
Writer's Reference [Bonus Track]

I didn't really know what to do when I picked this album up in Asda. I haven't bought an album that's in the charts since I was about 15, especially not one at Number One. I was worried someone might see me and my so-called music journalism career would be shot to pieces. All these thoughts dissolved however when I put the CD on and finally understood that Hard-Fi are what the words 'deserved hype' was made for.

I can finally identify with chavs; I really love this album. Don't let anyone tell you its shit until you've actually listened to it. You've got to love 'Hard To Beat' haven't you? I still sing along when it's used on adverts and holiday programmes; it's such an infectiously catchy song. 'Tied Up Too Tight' has the same effect, even if it is a little less happy.

'Gotta Reason' is the best song on the album with its popular blend of pop and ska creating the happiest atmosphere a song could ever emanate. 'Move On Now' lets the album down a little, it's the Hard-Fi I'd expected to hear; a boring ballad, which strikes no original chords or words. 'Better Do Better' soon brings the album back to its feet however, with its anthemic chorus and lyrics such as "your face makes me want to be sick, it's a physical reaction."

Hard-Fi have made it easy for me to have conversations with people again. Whenever people ask what music I'm into, they immediately think me pretentious for the list of unknown bands I reel off. Now, I can just say Hard-Fi and there's an instant connection. Or an instant punch in the face. Either way, there's some communication going on there, rather than a glazed expression and a stifled yawn. Ignore the fact they're popular if that's what's putting you off them, just listen to Stars of CCTV. Believe the hype.
