Open an album with an exploding burst of choruses that just scream "catharsis", a dramatic and rhythmic entailed song with the trademark of the almost whisper and screaming that really does mean Hawthorne Heights.
Progression is difficult to measure, almost impossible, especially in the area of the music industry, different views, different tastes, the way forward can be a difficult and almost clandestine concept, however, Hawthorne Heights have grabbed the opportunity with both hands and screamed their little hearts out to show they aren't just a drop in the ocean.
‘If Only You Were Lonely’- rings true for so many people, the young and the old, "I think about you every night...I see you in my dreams", the ambivalence of hating and loving someone in your past, still so strongly in your present that the past cannot simply be a memory, it lives each day along with you. ‘Saying Sorry’ and ‘Cross Me Off Your List’ are just two of the suitably titled songs that belong within the connotations of such an album.
However, as the album tracks build, the semantics and lexis of such an album doesn't seem to move on, neither does the "ripping" guitar chords, try to tell a story, but with few words instead of many, repetition of such emotive language works, but only for so long, can Hawthorne Heights maintain the standards that they have set themselves on? The personal choice of what is in your CD player is a just that, personal, however, to say this album should be on repeat for days at a time is very much an overstatement. The story and presentation becomes stale and predictable, however, the trademarks of Hawthorne Heights helps them keep their heads above water.
The second album, following the success of their first, ‘The Silence in Black and White’, will be easily followed, but whether it truly is because of the success of their sound or because they have made their mark on the scene is something for you to make your mind up about.
