Band Of The Month
He Is Legend - I Am Hollywood - Jess

I’m sorry boys, but really. ‘He Is Legend’? What a rubbish name for a band. Unless of course you’re actually talking about John Legend in which case your name is just a fact and not a rubbish combination of words. Like Saying ‘He Is Cleese’ if you were talking about John Cleese. Err, yeah.

Like the younger brothers of Hundred Reasons, He Is Legend are a group of energetic kids who like to turn their stereos up to full volume and take full advantage of the fact they have a lead singer who can sing and scream without sounding like a try-hard. It would definitely be interesting to go to a show of theirs as I have absolutely no idea what their fans would be like. Hardcore fans would find them too easy going, emo kids would find them too much fun. The album kicks in with ‘Seduction’, the musical equivalent of a jumble sale, a song mixing occasional hardcore with scathing emo and fun-filled rock. It’s a good song but not their best, so if, like me, you sometimes judge a band on one song don’t let it be this one. Keep listening.

The best thing about He Is Legend is that they certainly use their bassist to his full potential. Quite a few of the tracks start with a chest rumbling, finger shredding bassline. Stand-out track of the album, ‘Creature Walks’ has a lovely yet totally unexpected two second bass solo, whilst ‘Dinner With A Gypsy’ begins with more than a passing resemblance to Incubus and ends with a riff Santana would be proud of.

Each song on ‘I Am Hollywood’ takes a different turn, ‘Best In Mexico’ starts sounding like it’s being played by zombies before the verse’s vocals kick in and make you want to sway back and forth. Title track ‘I Am Hollywood’, however, is the worst song of the album but only because it’s hardcore and unnecessary, a bad choice of ending to an otherwise decent album.

It’s nice to see a band who don’t seem to know the meaning of the word ‘predictable’. A good, fun band with just the right amount of screamo is a hard find but He Is Legend have managed it easily - this album is definitely worth buying as they are certainly legends in the making.
