Its been two years since Hell Is For Heroes released their classic debut album ‘The Neon Handshake’ and if you ask these guys they will tell you that a lot can happen in a couple of years. First of all ‘The Neon Handshake’ came out and received rave reviews and together with constant touring, the band built up a strong fan base and despite all of this their major record label wasn’t happen with the way the new album was shaping up so HIFH split from the major label suits. Hell Is For Heroes came back though and this time took the independent route with the Captains Of Industry record label and didn’t have to answer to anybody but themselves and the result of that is ‘Transmit Disrupt’. This is an album that Hell Is For Heroes fans (me included) have been waiting for, so can it deliver the goods.
The first song on the new album is ‘Kamichi’ and its one of the best songs not just on this album, but one of the best songs Hell Is For Heroes have ever made. Its just classic HIFH with the swirling guitar riffs and with some truly haunting lyrics in the chorus which at one point are carried out by what sound like a school choir singing ‘Raising the first alarm, this is a warning sound’, this is such an amazing song. Next up is the newest single ‘Models For The Programme’ which also has a kind of a haunting quality to it and is another great song that is already getting live crowds going crazy as experienced on their recent support shows with Biffy Clyro. ‘Quiet Riot’ is good song but could maybe do with being a bit more of a heavier riot as the the song never quite hits as hard as it suggests it might. ‘Folded Paper Figures’ does hit harder however and is an awesome track which has Justin Schlosberg screaming at full force to really bring it home. ‘They Will Call Us Savages’ is a slower song and really reminds me of ‘Retreat’ from The Neon Handshake and is another great song.
The second half of the album kicks off with my favourite song on Transmit Disrupt which is ‘Silent As A Grave’ which is simply breathtaking. The lyrics, guitars, drums, everything about this track is amazing and I really hope this song is released as a single. Next is ‘One Of Us’ which was the first single from this album and is again an amazing song with another amazing riff and along with ‘Kamichi’ was one of my favourite songs from last year. ‘Transmit Disrupt’ is another slower song and like ‘They Will Call Us Savages’ comes off well. Things get a bit heavier again with ‘Discos and Casinos’ which is another song that wouldn’t look out of place on a HIFH live set list. The album ends with ‘Burning Lafeyette’ which is a great song to end on with its anti-conformist message and its another track that could only be pulled off by a band as good as Hell Is For Heroes.
I’ve read reviews for this album already which are basically just comparing this album to The Neon Handshake throughout, however I’m not interested in dwelling on the past, I’m going to take this album for what it is which is an excellent album by one of the best british bands around today. Songs like ‘Kamichi’ & ‘One Of Us’ have already become instant fan favourites after being released as singles and I believe other songs on Transmit Disrupt such as ‘Silent As A Grave’, ‘Models For The Programme’ & ‘Discos and Casinos’ will become just as popular. Hell Is For Heroes are a band that continue to make quality music and will continue to sell out shows all over the place and I just hope they continue to do it all for quite a while yet.
