Home Grown - When It All Comes Down - Andy
Album Cover

This is Home Grown’s first release since their popular (in more ways than one) album ‘Kings Of Pop’. The album shifted over 10,000 units in the UK alone, it was a fun pop-punk album but the problem was that while there were some good songs (You’re Not Along, Give It Up), there were other songs that really did nothing but make you want to press the skip button. However now they are being labelled as seasoned veterans of the pop/punk scene, will their new EP ‘When It All Comes Down’ be able to back that up.

‘Keep Your Distance’ is the first song up and does seem to support the above statement. It is a really strong song with a great melody and some great drumming as well. ‘Cross My Heart’ is next and not as good, the song itself is ok but it is a typical run of the mill Home Grown song and I also found the vocals really irritating on this one. ‘I Was Right About This’ and ‘Midnight City Sky’ are much better and are both really catchy and enjoyable pop-punk songs. My favourite song personally though is ‘I Win, You Lose’ which shows a lot more mature sound and a move away from their more disposable pop-punk past.

This latest release from Home Grown isn’t anything to rant and rave about but it is a solid all round release. ‘When It All Comes Down’ is a more mature release but for a band who gained such a strong fan base from a release like ‘Kings Of Pop’, that could end up being a double edge sword. The band’s last album was as pop as pop-punk can get and it remains to be seen whether Home Grown’s fans will be willing to except this more mature offering even if it is a stronger record.
