Band Of The Month
Linchpin - Small Town Theory - Andy

Ever wondered what would happen if Mcfly went emo? Well people there’s no need to ponder that question any longer. Linchpin are a group of teenage lads who are peddling the sort of emo pop that was built for CD:UK. Their first video for ‘Can’t Explain’ sees them showing off their emo fringes, doing group performances and generally acting a bit wacky, it’s like Busted had never split up. The one problem is that the whole pop band trying to be a rock band phase seems to have passed so it’s really hard to see who Linchpin are going to appeal to.

The thing is about Linchpin though is that they do seem to be trying to market themselves as a rock band as they have hooked themselves up with the same pr and street teaming people who have worked with bands like Funeral For A Friend in the past. Unfortunately the main problem for Linchpin is that they just don’t have the songs to follow everything up. The first single ‘Can’t Explain’ is so predictable it’s ridiculous while ‘Small Town Theory’ is just boring and every song on this mini-album just seems to blend into the next.

If you take these guys age into account then this is a good start but then again it is inevitably going their age, which counts against them as anyone over the age of 16 will be put off by that fact. There is no doubt that these guys can play their instruments and there are occasional flashes of something interesting (‘All I Want’) but at the moment I’m just going to say that these guys should just come back in 5 years time when they have some life experience.
