Now this is a hard one to describe, its rap meets punk but not in a Transplants way. MC Lars describes himself as post-punk laptop rap which is as good as description as any. I first heard about MC Lars when I watched the video for ‘Signing Emo’ and then I also saw him perform a few songs at the Give It A Name Festival and after that I knew I had to get a copy this EP. MC Lars’s songs all come from computer driven beats, samples and a small pile of instruments and he actually says in one of his songs that he used to be in a punk band but just got bored with that. So he decided to try something completely different and started rapping over DIY beats made on his laptop, hence the title of this EP.
The EP kicks off well with ‘iGeneration’ with is an awesome song about today’s youth also known as the Internet Generation. The song has a great beat which sounds like a Daft Punk song and it gets even better when the guitars kick in at the chorus and just makes me want to get up and dance. ‘Signing Emo’ is another song that shows Mr Lars Harris at his comic best with a song that is a total piss take out of the music industry and the whole Screamo fad. Also if you get a chance as well to watch the video for the song then check it out because it’s an excellent and very funny video. Then the EP ends on the ‘Mr Raven’ which is Lars’s take on the legendary poem ‘The Raven’ by Edgar Allan Poe. The song along contains a sample of a Brand New song which shows Lars’s punk rock background and really shows why even though this isn’t technically rock music, there will still be quite a lot of people like myself who will appreciate this for what it is, fun music.
There are some great songs on this EP but it’s not all good, there’s songs like ‘UK Visa Versa’ and ‘Straight Outta Stockholm’ which do have some good lyrics but that’s not enough to make ever want to listen to these songs ever again. My advice when it comes to MC Lars is to head over to his myspace page and have a listen to two of his best songs ‘Signing Emo’ & ‘iGeneration’ and if you enjoy them then you should definitely get you hands on the ‘The Laptop EP’ because Post-Punk-Laptop-Rap is definitely your kind of thing.
