Band Of The Month
Man Alive – Open Surgery - Adam

Ok, so I’ve had this Man Alive album about 2 weeks, and I’m still unsure as to what I think of it. The Militia Group have a certain talent for finding great bands before anyone else. After all, finding gems such as Acceptance, Copeland and Rufio to name but a few, gives you some indication of the immense talent this record label from Garden Grove, California possesses.

However, in Man Alive we have something that doesn’t quite hit the spot. I can’t quite put my finger on what it is that I don’t really like, nor what I do like about it, but there’s something… and it is bugging me!

It isn’t ‘bad’ by any stretch of the imagination, but it doesn’t shine either. And with recent albums from Fall Out Boy, Valencia and Panic! At The Disco competing for your stereos attention, you start to realise it’s fighting a losing battle from the beginning.

‘Give me a Sign’ kicks the album off to the feel that you are listening to a Midtown-esque style, only the harmonies aren’t as good, and the music lacks a certain kick. It does however, get a little… better.

Man Alive aren’t doing themselves any favours by jumping in an already over populated genre, with nothing on offer that we haven’t heard before. If you like chilled out, relaxed pop rock then it might be worth a listen, if not, then don’t waste your time on a record that promised much, but delivers little.
