Now tonight was suppose to be a celebration as this was the last show of A’s first big UK tour since the release of their long awaited 4 th album. It had been 3 years since they released the commercially successful ‘Hi-Fi Serious’ but in July they finally released their new album ‘Teen Dance Ordinance’. So tonight was suppose to be a time for rejoicing especially with two other great UK bands supporting as well in the form of Capdown and My Awesome Compilation. However, instead tonight could end up being A’s final show ever.
My Awesome Compilation are first on and there couldn’t be a better possible way to start proceedings. It’s obvious that many of the people here have never heard a Mac song before but the people who do know the band sing along to practically every word. Their set is one that consists of songs entirely from their new album ‘Actions’ and I’m sure that after a performance like this they will have sold a fare few copies of that album on the Merch table tonight. My personal favourites from their set were ‘You Need Discipline’, ‘Put Up A Fight’ and ‘Actions’ which all sounded spot on and show that MAC are definitely going no where in the near future.
Next up is Capdown and although they are a band I’m not too familiar with, I have seen them live once before and that was when they were headlining a packed out venue not much smaller than this, so it’s quite obvious from the strong following they have that there will be quite a few people here tonight just to see Capdown. They kick off their set with ‘Act Your Rage’, which gets the first mosh pits of the evening started. Their Ska-core anthems are received with delight by their fans in the middle but this is a very different crowd to the one’s they usually play too so I’m not sure if they will have won too many new fans tonight but whoever you are you have to respect and appreciate songs as good as ‘Ska Wars’.
Finally up is the headliner's 'A' who get a great reception when they walk out onto stage and they kick straight in with their usually starting song ‘Nothing’ which gets people going crazy straight away. They then go into all the crowd favourites like ‘Old Folks’, ‘Starbucks’, ‘Something’s Going On’ and the classic ‘I Love Lake Tahoe’, all of which were received with sheer delight by the crowd. It was only towards the end of their set when things totally changed when singer Jason Perry announced to the crowd that after this show the band were going on an indefinite break which could be viewed as a nice way of letting the fans know that they are breaking up.
So it turns out that this could actually be the last time that A will ever play together and the funny thing was that the news didn’t really come as a shock to the crowd. With A’s new album ‘Teen Dance Ordinance’ being somewhat overlooked and with some members working on other projects (Dan Carter in The Lucky Nine) this was all pretty much expected. The new songs where just not greeted with the same enthusiasm as the older stuff tonight and in their encore they played two new songs when you could tell that everyone was just looking forward to hearing ‘Monkey Kong’ which sure enough they did end on and it was a great way too end the night.
So tonight’s gig end up being a bigger occasion than most people thought it would be end up being. When most people thought it would just be the end of another tour, it could end up being the end of an era for A.
