Now I’ve seen Dopamine quite a few times over the past 6 months. I’ve seen them when they’ve supported both Underoath and Further Seems Forever and I’ve also seen them a few times at their own headlining shows. Now I’m not going to try and hide the fact that I am a huge fan of this band but even I’ll admit that on one or two occasions when I’ve seen them live they haven’t always sounded as good as they do on record so tonight was going to be an interesting one.
This is the first time I’ve been to Mr Smiths in Bournemouth and it’s a tiny venue and by tiny I mean that most people actually have living rooms that are bigger than this venue. It’s not a bad little venue though and you can sit at the bar and still see all the action on the stage opposite. So that’s what I did for all three of the support bands and let’s just say that none of them impressed me enough to even remember the name of their bands. After all it was Dopamine I was here to see and it was when they started setting their equipment up, that I finally got off the bar stool to get to the front.
There didn’t seem to be that many people here to see the headliners tonight, it seemed like the venue was mostly full of friends of different members of the support bands. There were some people who were even sitting down at the front when Dopamine started playing although it didn’t take them long to get off their back sides and start paying attention. Dopamine kicked off with ‘Destroy Something Beautiful’ and then followed up with ‘Laruso’ which both sounded amazing tonight. They seemed a lot more confident up on that stage than what they did a month ago when supporting Underoath in London and that really showed in the quality of their performance.
The rest of their set was manly songs from their amazing debut album ‘Auditioning My Escape Plan’ which included the awesome ‘Six Miles South Of Home’, ‘Lifeline Exercise No.1’ and ‘United By Fear’ which I got dedicated to me by the band before they played it which really made my night. Their set came to an end with ‘Beauty Queens and Blood Bath’ which I always thought was a strange song to end on because I thought they should end the night on a song from the album but tonight the song sounded as dramatic as a final song should and was truly the perfect way to end things.
In my opinion Dopamine are one of the best bands in the UK at the moment bar none. So go and buy their album, go see them live, go and show support to a band that really truly deserves that support.
