Band Of The Month
Fall Out Boy 22.02.05 - Andy

Support From: Spitalfield & My Awesome Compilation

Venue: The Zodiac - Oxford

Now this was a gig that I was really looking forward to, first of all it’s in the Oxford Zodiac which over the 6 months has become like my local venue even though it is over a 30 minute drive from where I live. The second and main reason why I’ve been looking forward to tonight so much for is because I will be seeing three of my favourite bands of the moment in Fall Out Boy, Spitalfield and My Awesome Compilation. So in these near perfect surroundings and with this near perfect line up, anticipation for the proceedings to get started is running high.

First up is My Awesome Compilation who are one of the most exciting UK Emo bands around at the moment. They have similarities to US bands such as The Get Up Kids & Motion City Soundtrack but still obtain a very individual and British sound and are good as most of the stuff coming out of America . This is the first time I’ve seen them live but I’m really impressed, on tracks like ‘As Always’ and ‘Wish You Well’ they sound amazing, they put on a great live show with Darius Cobb jumping off of guitar amps and swinging his bass around his body it makes even more fun to watch. MAC also preview some new stuff tonight from their forthcoming debut album and the sound of things to come from this band is very promising indeed.

Spitalfield follow in great fashion, kicking off with the awesome ‘Kill The Drama’ which has the crowd jumping up and down straight away. Other highlights from their set include ‘I Loved The Way She Said “LA”’ and my personal favourite ‘Those Days You Felt Alive’. Spitalfield also previewed new material from their new album Stop Doing Bad Things which is March 22 nd although they didn’t get to play as many new songs as they may have wanted as when they asked the crowd to pick between a brand new track or an old track, the crowd opted for the old track, although next time if they really want to preview their new songs then maybe they should make the old track option a song as good as ‘Those Days You Felt Alive’.

Then finally onto the headliners of the evening Fall Out Boy who we already knew were due to play a much shorter set than usual due to Pete Wentz being too ill to travel to the UK so TJ from Spitalfield covers for him but he has only been able to learn 9 of the FOB in time for the UK shows. As soon as Fall Out Boy get started though, people start going crazy, bodies are jumping up and down, the mosh pit opens up in the centre, albeit isn’t the most dangerous mosh pit you’ll ever see, at least people are having a good time. ‘Grand Theft Autumn (Where Is Your Boy)’ and ‘Dead On Arrival’ go down a storm and tonight really shows how far this band have come in the space of a year. There are a few hundred people who fill this venue tonight who sing along to every word of every song and it’s an amazing sight to be seen and with their new album being only a couple of months away now, the only way is up for the pop-punk underdogs.
