Band Of The Month
Finch 10.05.05 - Andy

Support From: Motion City Soundtrack

Venue: Islington Academy - London

Now going to a gig where two of your favourite bands are on the same bill doesn’t happen very often and that was why I was particularly excited about tonight’s gig. The two bands who are playing are Finch who are headlining and also Motion City Soundtrack who are the support for tonight. It was understandably a sold out venue full of people who have all been waiting for the return to the UK of both these bands for quite a while.

Motion City Soundtrack are the band I was looking forward to seeing the most, mainly because it has been well over a year since I last saw them live whereas I saw Finch last week at the Give It A Name Festival (the less said about that event the better). MCS come on to a lot of cheers considering they are the support tonight and kick straight in with an energetic performance of ‘ Cambridge’. Their set tonight was pretty much all songs from their debut album ‘I Am The Movie’ apart from a couple of new songs. My favourite songs from their set tonight were ‘The Future Freaks Me Out’, ‘Capital H’ & one of their new songs ‘Everything Is Alright’. Motion City deliver an excellent set considering Justin has been ill and had problems with his vocal chords recently but that didn’t stop them from putting in a great performance and getting a lot of the crowd dancing along.

As I mentioned before it was only a week ago that I last saw Finch and that night they weren’t on particularly good form and I think they knew it because at the end of their set they started mashing up their own equipment. Tonight though they look like a different band, they sounded much better, they seemed to enjoy themselves more and it was an excellent performance. I think they may have played a few too many new songs as people just know the new songs yet and its probably better promotion for their new album if they play more old songs that people know and play them really well. My personal highlights were ‘Awake’, ‘What Is To Burn’ and their new single ‘Brother Bleed Brother’ which sounded awesome tonight. All in all this was a brilliant Tuesday night out and with both bands having new albums due out on the 7 th of June, my advice is to go out and get both because that’s exactly what I’ll be doing.
