Band Of The Month
Motion City Soundtrack 20.09.05 - Andy

Support From: Copaland & Circa Survive

Venue: The Oxford Zodiac

As many people will know, Motion City Soundtrack are one of my favourite bands and have been ever since I got addicted to their debut album ‘I Am The Movie’ and they have come a long way since then. This is the first UK headline tour that MCS have ever done and it really shows how far they have come as I once saw the band play in London in front of a practically empty venue to a crowd of about 40. Tonight however they’re playing in Oxford in front of a sold out venue of 400 people and their London show which they are due to play later in the week will hold about 2000 fans.

Tonight I didn’t manage to get to the venue until about 8 o’clock which meant that we missed the openers The Maple State and only managed to catch the end of Circa Survive who didn’t really impress. So the first band I get to see is Copeland who sounded pretty good live. At first they seemed like a strange choice of support for Motion City Soundtrack and some of their songs don’t really manage to capture the crowds full attention but when Copeland play tracks from their new album like ‘No One Really Wins’ and ‘Pin Your Wings’ they sound like that support slot was made for them. It was a set that had its ups and downs but overall Copeland do impress and I hope it won’t be the last time we see them visiting our shores.

Motion City Soundtrack receive a heroes welcome when they walk out onto the stage and for anyone who loves both of the bands albums as much as I do then I think they will agree that they pretty much played the perfect set tonight. They played a perfect mix of old and new and the band were just on top form with my personal favourites from their set being ‘Mary Without Sound’, ‘My Favourite Accident’ & the awesome ‘Make Out Kids’. I really don’t think it could have been possible for them to play a better set tonight. So much so that I didn’t think they would play an encore just from the fact that I couldn’t think of another song that they could come out and play as they had already played all the fan favourites like ‘Everything Is Alright’, ‘My Favourite Accident’, ‘When You’re Around’ and ‘The Future Freaks Me Out’.

When the band comes back on it’s quite a surprise but it seems like they have one more trick up their sleeves. It’s just a one-song encore and they play the awesome ‘Throw Down’ from their Split EP with Schatzi, which proves to be the perfect end to the show. Tonight has ended up being one of the best performances I’ve seen from MCS and they’re just one of these bands that when you leave their show, you can’t help but leave with a big smile on your face.
