Band Of The Month
Taking Back Sunday 25.01.05 - Andy

Support From: My Chemical Romance & Communique

Venue: Newcastle Student Union - Newcastle

As soon as I walked into the venue I was extremely happy as I was going to be seeing both Taking Back Sunday and My Chemical Romance this evening, the second reason why I was happy was because I was only the 2 nd person to walk into the venue and I had already seen exactly ‘where I want to be’, you see what I did there.

Anyway so I got to my ideal spot, which was easily the best spot in the venue to see all the action, and then not long after we arrived Communique came on. With the venue still half empty it was hard for them to make an impact, with their brand of Emo which was very similar to The Get Up Kids. They were a good band but it was obvious that no one in the crowd knew who they were and everyone was just thinking about the two main attractions on after Communique.

So next up was My Chemical Romance who I’ve never seen before and they were simply awesome, they came in with ‘ You Know What They Do to Guys Like Us in Prison’ and from that point onwards they sounded superb. Gerard Way puts on a brilliant display as does the rest of his band mates and the crowd just went crazy and parts of the crowd even collapsed at a couple of points during the set. My favourite songs in the set tonight were ‘I'm Not Okay (I Promise)’, ‘Helena’ and ‘Ghost of You’. They are a band that a lot of people really love at the moment and when seeing them perform like this tonight, you can exactly why.

Finally onto the headliners Taking Back Sunday who I’ve only seen once before at Reading Festival in August and they had problems with sound on that occasion as did a lot of the bands who were on early on the Friday. Tonight they come in with ‘Where You Want To Be’ which whips the crowd into a frenzy and even the sound starts off not to great, it improves quickly and by the time they move onto ‘Timberwolves At New Jersey’ they are sounding awesome, Adam Lazarra constantly swings his microphone around in between his singing parts and it was hard to believe that TBS would be able to get as good as reaction as My Chemical Romance did but straight away it is easy to tell who the real headliners of tonight are.

Taking Back Sunday continue throughout their hour long set to keep the crowd moving and again there are quite a few parts of the crowd collapsing at different points during the set. Taking back Sunday finished on ‘Cute Without The E’ which got without doubt the best reaction of the night as you would expect but then they came back on and did an encore with including ‘New American Classic’ which started off with just Adam Lazarra and Fred Mascherino doing it acoustic but then the rest of the band came on for the second part of the song to help finish it and it was definitely one of the highlights of the night, it was simply beautiful. Then they ended on ‘Decade Under The Influence’ which got the crowd going wild for the final time of the evening.

My favourite songs of the evening were ‘Timberwolves At New Jersey’, ‘You’re So Last Summer’, ‘The Union’, ‘Cute Without The E’ and ‘New American Classic’. This was just an awesome gig and the more I think about, the more I think it was actually one of the best gigs I have ever been to. I can’t wait to see Taking Back Sunday again when they come back to England in June to support Green Day. They are definitely still one of the best bands around today
