Tonight was set to be a good night, I was out in the capital heading towards one of the better London venues and I was going to see one my favourite bands (Dopamine) and going to see another band for the first time (Fastlane) who I was really excited about seeing. However I had never really listened to the headliners before so I really wasn’t bothered about them but when a US band comes over and picks support as good as this we had to come out and show our support.
The first band on were The Forgiving but we missed them due to arriving fashionably late so we got there just as Dopamine kicked into their set with ‘Destroy Something Beautiful’ and then went into the awesome ‘Laruso’. It was a good start to their set however this wasn’t the best I’ve ever seen the band play, songs like ‘Deadwood Floats’ didn’t come across strong enough tonight and it took them a bit to get into ‘United By Fear’. Apart from that though it was a pretty faultless performance and the highlights were ‘ Lifeline Exercise No.1’ which sounded immense, as did the finale of ‘Wake Up’, which is such a great way to end a great set.
Next up it’s Fastlane and at the start they announce that this is their 26 th show in 29 days and that they are all feeling ill, so it feels like they’re already making excuses for an expected below par performance but any notions of such are dispelled straight away when they start off with ‘Dreaming’. They’re such a powerful band and that comes across even more live than it does on record. All the songs they play are from their debut album New Start and they all sound amazing, my particular favourites from tonight are ‘New Start’, ‘Dreaming’ and the new single ‘Eyes Closed’. Tonight will definitely not be the last time I’ll be seeing these guys.
Then it was time for the headliners Zebrahead, as I mentioned before I wasn’t really that bothered about seeing them so we retreated back to that bar to watch them from there and from what I heard I was impressed. They’re your typical fun, bouncy Pop-Punk band but with a little bit of rapping which maybe just differentiates them from every other Pop-Punk band, much in the same way that Yellowcard do with using the violin. They are a good live band though and even though The Garage is only half full tonight, they get most of the crowd on their feet and manage to create the atmosphere of a much more packed venue. All in all I wouldn’t bend over backwards to check out this band but if you love straightforward Pop-Punk like New Found Glory then you’ll love Zebrahead.
