Band Of The Month
Halifax Interview 15.05.05 - Andy & Dave

Andy (Pep-Rock): Hi, for the purpose of the interview could you please tell us your name and what u do in the band?

Chris: I’m Chris, I play guitar and I sing.

Mike: I’m Mike & I’m the singer.

Andy (Pep-Rock): How did u guys all meet?

Chris: Mike and I were in the band first amongst some other members that we didn’t really like which led to them getting kicked out so we needed three new members and I called up my friend Adam who’s our guitar player now and he played the guitar so we needed a drummer and Mike knew this guy named Tommy and he called up Tommy and asked him to drum for us. Then we needed a Bass player so we called up this guy who was mine and our guitarist’s friend but we toured we him and he was kind of a dick and we didn’t get along with him so we kicked him out so now it’s just us four and we are currently getting a new bass player soon.

Mike: It’s a pretty simple story, just a bunch of friend’s really getting together.

Dave (Pep-Rock): How did the deal with Drive-thru records come about for you guys?

Mike: We had just started playing shows out in the State’s in California, where we’re from, and we started getting attention from some labels and we really wanted to sign with someone and we had a few labels in mind but Drive-thru really weren’t interested in the beginning and then we were playing one of our shows and Richard & Stephanie (Drive-Thru Records) were there and we had been friends with them from before so it wasn’t like we had met for the first time. They saw the show and they were telling us ‘you guys sounded really good, we really liked your set and we really like your CD’ and we just said thank you very much and didn’t really think much of it until one day our manager called us up and said he’d spoken to Richard and that they really wanted to sign us and it was really cool.

Dave (Pep-Rock): Who would you guys liken your sound to and who would you like to be compared to?

Chris: Probably no one but you’re always going to get compared to other bands.

Mike: No I wouldn’t want us to be compared to anyone. It would be cool if people were compared to us but we’re just here trying to make music that’s honest. We’re just a rock band.

Dave (Pep-Rock): If you had a mission statement for your band, what would it be?

Mike: I don’t know, just to have fun I guess.

Chris: Yeah to just make sure we have a good time and enjoy what we do.

Dave (Pep-Rock): What’s been the best experience you’ve had being in this band?

Mike: I don’t know, it was pretty cool record our new record because we’ve just finished recording that and it’s called "The Inevitability of a Strange World" and recording that with the producer for like four and a half weeks and just having a full on experience of recording a proper record was amazing. Also coming to Europe as well has been awesome. Just the general experiences that we’ve had after joining drive-thru. Being able to do tours all around the States and come over to Europe as well and have kids know us and our music is the best experience.

Andy (Pep-Rock): How’s the UK tour going so far?

Chris: Yeah it’s going really well, it’s different from the United States obviously because it’s a different country but also because we’ve never traveled on a proper tour bus before. Back home we travel on tour in our van so it’s awesome not having to drive late at night after a show so it makes it more like being on a vacation in Europe .

Andy (Pep-Rock): What’s the best and the worst thing about being in the UK ?

Mike: What’s the best and the worst thing. I definitely know what the worst thing is, the food.

Chris: The best thing is how cute all the girls are over here. Not to diss you girls back home but you guys are better looking people over here I would say. The ratio of a good looking girl is much higher here than over in the states.

Mike: The kids are really really cool over here to, everyone seems to be really into the music which is really good.

Andy (Pep-Rock): What’s the craziest thing that’s ever happened to you guys on tour?

Mike: Actually I recently had my most crazy moment on tour, I didn’t have one before that, and I don’t think any of us did.

Chris: Yeah we did.

Mike: Oh we did.

Chris: Yeah we hit a deer with the van.

Mike: Oh yeah, well my new most crazy moment on tour now is turning 21 in Bristol, England. Having taken four shots while on stage and they were all triple shots, while on stage and still being able to play and being incredibly drunk. We had a good time.

Dave (Pep-Rock): How did u feel afterwards?

Mike: I felt fine, I had a really drunken night but the next morning I woke up and felt fine.

Chris: Yeah I still think I out drank you that night.

Mike: You probably did, Chris drinks like a mad man.

Andy (Pep-Rock): So you said you finished recording your album now, when’s it due out and what can we expect from it?

Mike: It’s due out in September we believe but we’re not quite sure yet. It’s called "The Inevitability of a Strange World", it was produced by Lou Giordano who’s worked with Taking Back Sunday and Sunny Day Real Estate. You can expect a more mature sound, it’s very very rock with some catchy choruses. It’s something that we are all very very proud of, we are very excited, and I want to hear because we still don’t even have a copy because it’s being mixed right now. We had this guy, Jonathan, from back home who’s in a band called Waking Ashland and he plays piano in the band and he came in and played piano on the record. We have quite a few cool rock n roll signatures on the record.

Chris: Yeah it’s completely different from the EP, I mean it’s still Halifax but the EP was very much thrown together and all the songs on the EP were just from old demo’s but this will be the first proper thought out record from Halifax.

Mike: It definitely sound’s like us and I think the kid’s who were into the EP will still be into the album but I think it also opens up a wider range of audience for us as I think it’s a lot more diverse.

Andy (Pep-Rock): Do you guys have any last comments or closing statements?

Chris: Thank you very much for doing this interview.

Mike: Yeah and I want to thank all the kids in the UK who have come out and supported us on this tour, it’s been a blast.

Dave (Pep-Rock): Cheers
