Band Of The Month
Hell Is For Heroes Interview 26.10.04 - Andy

Pep-Rock: Could you please tell us your name and what you do in the band?

Justin: I’m Justin, Singer.

Pep-Rock: Hell Is For Heroes is a pretty great band name, how did you come up with the name?

Justin: Ummm, we stole it actually from a film. It was a 1960’s Steve McQueen film about the second world war. We just really liked the name I suppose, but the film kind of interested because I think it was the first Hollywood film about World War 2 which wasn’t like a straight forward kind of glory boys, clean, no violence, war was a wonderful thing kind of film.

Pep-Rock: How did you guys all meet?

Justin: Just the usual really, some of us went to school together, some of us met through mutual friends. Just that kind of thing really.

Pep-Rock: So how’s the current tour going so far?

Justin: It’s going really well, it’s kind of excitingbecause we’ve just finished our second album so a lot of the set feels really fresh and really different to the band as well than from when we were touring from the last album.

Pep-Rock: After being signed to, releasing your debut album through and recently leaving a major label. How does it fell to be starting over again, this time independently?

Justin: In some ways it feels like a fresh start, just cos it’s the first time that we have the freedom and control over what we do that as a band we’ve kind of yearned for from the start. Although at the same time being on a major label for our first album has enabled us to build a support base so that we are now lucky enough to do it on our own. We are the first to acknowledge that, as much as we bitch and moan about EMI and stuff, it has kind of done the business for us.

Pep-Rock: So how did the Captains Of Industry, Independent situation come about?

Justin: Well Captains Of Industry is, to me, just a loose term for a lot of different ideas. There the Captains Of Industry label, which is an independent label and is more of a collective outfit, which is what we are a part of. It’s just about sharing resources really between bands and helping bands along the road of being self sufficient.

Pep-Rock: Is the new album all finished now then?

Justin: Yeah just about, it’s getting mastered at the moment but yeah it’s essentially recorded and mixed.

Pep-Rock: How’s all the new stuff that you’ve been playing so far, like ‘One Of Us’ & ‘Kamichi’, been received by the fans?

Justin: Really well actually, it’s kind of nice cos those songs are like a lot of the album, certainly in our ears, is a lot different from stuff on the first album. It was always going to be a bit of a shot in the dark to write and record tunes like because we’d made a lot of friends, well at least a few friends, from the first record. Everyone’s being really nice about it and people seem to understand where we are going from really, which is good.

Pep-Rock: This Sunday coming up is Halloween, what’s your best Halloween costume ever?

Justin: I don’t know, I’ve never really done Halloween, yeah I guess I’m just a bit English like that. As a kid we always had kids coming over and knocking on our door at home and I always wanted to go and join them but my mum would never let me go join so I was always a bit bitter about that, and I guess I still am today so I never really got to wear anything particularly fancy.

Pep-Rock: So what’s the plan for Hell Is For Heroes in 2005?

Justin: Umm, put out the album, play a lot of shows, write some new stuff, u know just the same as our plans have always been, just make records and play shows.

Pep-Rock: It’s going to be pretty full on then with the new album coming out?

Justin: Yeah, well its kind of getting pretty hectic which we’re not complaining about but I guess we could all do with a holiday.

Pep-Rock: Do you guys have any advice for other people out there trying to start bands and make it in the music industry?

Justin: No, none what so ever. I still don’t know what it is or what it means to really make it in the music industry. I suppose to some people we’ve kind of made it but then again to some people we’ve been a big giant flop. I guess it really depends on a person’s definition of making it. My only advice would be just be yourself.

Pep-Rock: Do you guys having last comments or closing statements?

Justin: None what so ever.

Pep-Rock: Cheers, thanks a lot Justin.

Justin: Thank you.
