Band Of The Month
The Lucky Nine Interview 05.10.05 - Andy

Pep-Rock: Hi, for the purpose of the interview could you please tell us your names and what you do in the band?

Colin: Hey my names Colin and I sing in the band.

Dan: I’m Dan and I play guitar in the band, well I’m a wannabe guitarist in the band, I’m generally the lesser of the two.

Pep-Rock: So tonight is kind of an album release show, you looking forward to it?
Colin: Hell yeah.
Dan: Yeah I think so, its been all good and we’ve had a bit of a warm up this week and we’ve just got back from doing a bunch of shows in Japan and got back last Saturday so we haven’t rehearsed so I think this is a rock out with your cock kind of moment really.
Colin: You gonna do that?
Dan: You what, yeah maybe from behind my guitar so no one will see anyway.

Pep-Rock: The new album ‘True Crown Foundation Songs’ came out this last week, what’s been the reaction to it so far?
Colin: Really positive actually.

Dan: Yeah all the reviews have been fucking great.

Colin: Yeah obviously when you put your heart and your soul into something, you’re really proud of it anyway so it’s kind of nice when other people say really nice things about it as well.
Dan: Yeah all the reviews have been really good, we haven’t had one pasteing yet but we’re getting ready for it.
Colin: Yeah there’s always some kind of backlash to it.
Dan: There’s always one kind of shit sandwich style review but so far so good.

Pep-Rock: How would you describe the album to someone who hasn’t heard it yet?
Colin: You can cover this one Dan.
Dan: I don’t know, I hate doing all these descriptions and comparisons, I don’t know, it’s just a dark rock record.
Colin: Yeah it’s just full of melody and full of metal and full of hardcore.
Dan: It’s just an album full of all our influences and interests.

Pep-Rock: How does the album differ from the EP, which came out earlier this year?
Colin: Um, we took more time on the album than we could on the EP really.
Dan: Yeah the EP was very much, we need to get it out now kind of thing. So it literally was that, we recorded three tracks in a day, we did all the guitars in my bedroom, Colin did the vocals on my laptop and we did the drums in our studio so it was all very hands on, but I’m very happy with how it all turned out.
Colin: Yeah I am, it has a very homemade vibe to it.

Pep-Rock: So what you guys up to for the rest of the year?
Colin: I’m currently recording the new Hundred Reasons record right now and that’s going really really well. We’re doing the drums on tracks this week so I’ve been able to shy away and play this show and stuff. It’s all very rock and roll at the moment.
Dan: Yeah at the moment it very much a case of each of us finding time and when we all have spaces in our schedules.
Colin: Yeah because Dan has the ‘A’ tour starting next week and in November we have the tour supporting The Bloodhound Gang.
Dan: Yeah November 3 rd till the 15 th supporting them around the UK which’ll be fun, it’s a really weird bill but should be a lot of fun. They’re really good friends of mine and with ‘A’ I’ve toured with them a bunch of times. Jim who sings for them was actually gonna release The Lucky Nine album over in the states on his label but that all went kind of tits up but he’s been a fan for quite a while so that was really cool that he wanted to do that for us. Although I think he just did it for a free t-shirt.

Pep Rock: How hard is it to juggle the Lucky Nine stuff with your other projects?
Colin: It can be a bit awkward sometimes and it’s not down to any particular party or label. Like when we were touring in Japan we went over there with ‘A’ so Dan was having to play two shows a night and its kind of things like that where you need to kind of try make things work but as long as we have time to do it then we’ll do it.

Dan: The one thing is, is that this is not a side project although it seems as though this is how it has come about because everyone is fully aware that 2 of us are in other bands and that’s the way its always been and everyone is cool with that so it’s just about finding the time for it.

Pep-Rock: You guys have been touring in your different bands for a few years now, what’s the craziest thing that’s ever happened to you while on tour?
Dan: Mine is generally anything that I’ve ever witnessed while on tour with The Bloodhound Gang. Everyone considers them to be a bit of a joke band but they are so far beyond that and they’re so living the dream more than any band I’ve ever toured with before. The worst thing I’ve ever seen them do was to make a guy eat his own shit to get into a gig, and it still had a bit of banana in it. They did actually put it up on their website but I’m not sure if its still there.
Colin: Yeah that’s the worst thing I’ve ever heard about.

Dan: & we don’t need to do crazy stuff when we have bands like them who will just do the stuff for us and we can just watch.

Pep Rock: Do you guys have any last comments or closing statements?
Dan: Listen to our album, it’s really really good.
Colin: Yeah we’re really proud of it and it’s awesome and a lot of people have been surprised so far.
Dan: I think so a lot of people have been surprised.
Colin: Yeah that’s it’s a totally different band and they’re actually quite good.
Dan: I think the general expectation was that it was just those two guys from those other bands just pissing about.
Colin: Everyone just thinks you’re wanking off when you do stuff like this.
Dan: Yeah but that doesn’t come till later.
Colin: Yeah when you’re listening to it.
(Laughs)
Dan: But seriously I just want people to hear it and then they’ll be able to judge it on its merits instead of standing by preconceptions.
Pep-Rock: Cheers
