Band Of The Month
The Mascara Story Interview 07.09.05 - Andy

Pep-Rock: Hi, could you please tell us your name and what you do in the band?

Daveit: Daveit Ferris - Vocals/guitar/piano

Pep-Rock: So how’s everything been for you guys since you won the Kerrang unsigned competition? Can you tell us about how it all happened?
Daveit: It’s like a whirlwind romance really. Its all happened so majorly fast for us. One day I saw a golden opportunity to enter a competition that would catapult us into important peoples eyes. So I entered us into the competition, amazingly we won. It shocked even us. When you consider that over 2000 bands entered, we did pretty all right. Things have been amazing since it, except the bitterness that comes with such a thing.

Pep-Rock: What was it like going from being an unsigned band to playing Download Festival within a matter of weeks?
Daveit: It was scary! Basically every other band on that bill had done big festivals before, and had been doing it for years. But there were 3 Irish kids, who just got catapulted into this big bad world of rock, not having a clue what we should do. That was the most nervous day of our lives. We coped and got some good reviews, the nerves certainly showed, but if they didn’t id be very fucking shocked.

Pep-Rock: So have you guys got a proper record deal now?
Daveit: Yeah. We're with Scar Records.
Pep-Rock: What’s the next release planned from The Mascara Story?
Daveit: We've recorded a batch of new songs, which are more mature and the direction we've wanted to go in for a long time. And now we're just at home rehearsing, considering our options for the songs. Release another single and b-side, finish the album, etc.

Pep-Rock: When can we expect a full debut album?
Daveit: We've always maintained that we'd love an album out by January. However, since we're basically touring all of October. Push that date back to February. We have no shortage of songs, it’s just a matter of doing it. Which we will do!

Pep-Rock: You guys are going to be back touring again soon supporting Reuben, are you looking forward to the tour?
Daveit: Reuben has always been our drummer’s favourite band, since "scared of the police". We had heard of them when we were all at high school, as we had a friend called Reuben, who got it tight. We're really looking forward to the tour, we hope the Reuben fans can appreciate what we do. There’s always talk of how we sound like "busted", but because we're a three piece and we can do harmonies? I think so. It'll be an awesome tour.

Pep-Rock: You guys have been through a lot this past year, what’s been your personal highlight?
Daveit: My highlight was when we did a handful of shows with Funeral For A Friend in Ireland. Just the atmosphere at those shows were amazing, even for us. Those kids in Belfast and Dublin sure can fucking rock. Just chilling backstage with a band you admire, is a lot of fun. There’s a zillion highlights for me, but that’s the first one that popped into my head. So it must hold its own.

Pep-Rock: Right random question time, if you had the chance to be an animal for the day. What animal would you be and why? As an example I would choose to be a Hippo because I think they Rock and I also really enjoyed playing Hungry Hungry Hippos when I was a kid.
Daveit: Ha ha, you lunatic! I think I’d choose to be a Llama, basically just because of my massive Silverchair obsession!

Pep-Rock: What have The Mascara Story got planned for the rest of 2005 and the beginning of 2006?
Daveit: Well as we mentioned, we have the Reuben tour, that starts on the 6th of October and ends on the 20th, and then from the 21st till 30th we're back in Ireland to tour around. So October is fucking busy for us, lots of shows and hardly any nights off. We’ll do it though. After that we'll just be writing more and recording more songs for the 'vault. The objectives are basically to tour and get this album out early next year.

Pep-Rock: Do you guys have any last comments or closing statements?
Daveit: Sean (Keddy, Bass/Vocals) is the poster boy for the new campaign.
Pep-Rock: Cheers
Daveit: Cheers mate
